Youth work - Policy

 Global youth work practice is underpinned by policy.

 The current National Occupation Standards for Youth Work recognise the importance of young people as active global citizens. Included is a standard to "Encourage young people to broaden their horizons to be active citizens"

 To meet the standard, you must be able to:

• Explore constructively with young people the concept of citizenship including its relevance at local, national and international levels
• Explore with young people the global context to personal, local and national decisions and actions

 To meet the standard, you must know and understand:

• Key local, national and global issues, including issues associated with sustainability within youth work and their relationships to individuals and to each other
• What is meant by active citizenship, including its relation to families, local communities, local and national government, and in international affairs

Think Global continues to work to create a more enabling policy environment for global youth work. This has included a briefing to DFID and contributions to DFE youth policy, comprising both background information and policy recommendations, to inform the development of support for global youth work.
