Board of Trustees
Think Global has a Board of Trustees of up to 11 people, with a range of skills and experiences, but all with a belief in the importance of global learning for creating a better world.
Stewart Crocker (Chair)
Former Executive Director of Waste Watch, and CEO of the Resource Alliance. Former trustee of FarmAfrica and the Soil Association; and current trustee of Friends of the Earth. Stewart is fascinated by the interconnection between environmental conservation and international development, and is a firm believer in the importance of education in increasing awareness and understanding of the global challenges we face.

Chris Shiel (Vice-Chair)
Associate Professor at Bournemouth University. Chair of Bournemouth’s Fairtrade Town Steering Group and is also working with the Council and other stakeholders, to implement the Earth Charter. Chair of Avonbourne International Business and Enterprise Academy Trust and former Board Member of DEED and UYDO. Chris has championed global perspectives in education and her approach is based on seeking to develop global citizens who understand the need for sustainable development.
Mike Peirce (Treasurer)
Deputy Director at the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership, where he leads a number of executive education programmes, including the World Bank Sustainable Development Leadership Programme for senior Bank staff. In May 2009 he directed the St James's Palace Nobel Laureates Symposium on climate change that concluded with a Memorandum now signed by over fifty Nobel Laureates. He is involved in a number of other initiatives, including as a member of the Steering Group of the Prince of Wales's Accounting for Sustainability Project (A4S).
Debbie Godfrey-Phaure
Executive Headteacher of Avonbourne International Business and Enterprise Academy Trust. She leads two colleges: Avonbourne and Harewood and a sixth form, with a Primary school due to open in September 2014. She believes that education is pivotal in promoting social and economic justice. Debbie is an advocate of the ‘Earth Charter’ and has worked extensively on projects linked to this, and on major international projects such as the education and safety of migrant students with Oulu in Finland, and designing curriculums.
Jo Hensher, Siemens
Jo currently works for Siemens, much of which involves studying global trends and their impact on cities in particular. She has an understanding of how globalisation affects the business environment and of its impact on the jobs market, and has a significant appreciation of what attributes young people need to succeed in such an environment. She has spent a large part of her career working on global trends and their impact on cities in particular.
James Luger
As an experienced civil servant, James brings an understanding of sustainable development, environment and economic policy to the Think Global Board.
Building on an early educational career (working with pre-16 students exhibiting challenging behaviour), James’s experience encompasses NGO (Keep Britain Tidy, National Youth Agency, NIACE), economic development, further/higher education and most recently regional and national policy roles.
Throughout his career, James has maintained a long standing commitment to and passion for education for sustainable development and global citizenship (ESD-GC), most notably by leading a partnership consortium of 30+ public and educational institutions to secure the UK’s first UN Regional Centre of Expertise (ESD) in 2007.
Fran Martin
Teacher, teacher educator and researcher. She has had an interest in Development Education since the mid 1980s when she was a founder member of Aylesbury DEC in Buckinghamshire. Later she became heavily involved in the work of Tide global learning, leading study visit to The Gambia between 2002-2005, and researching study visit courses from 2006 to the present day. She has also served as a trustee for the World Studies Trust and part of the management group for the Global Teacher Project.
Steve Miller
Community activist, social entrepreneur, consultant, researcher and trainer. He founded Tzedek in 1990 as a Jewish response to global poverty - an organisation which aims to integrate educational and campaigning activities with support for project partners in Africa and Asia. Currently Co-Chair of the Jubilee Debt Campaign, a national campaigning coalition of local activists and national agencies. As a Fellow of the Faiths & Civil Society Unit at Goldsmiths College one of Steve's interests is building bridges between academic and practitioner communities.
David Murray
Chief Executive of the Green Party, having previously worked for the Ramblers and the Campaign for National Parks. David also worked for StudentForce for Sustainability (now Change Agents); an environmental education charity that drives young people, graduates, business and communities towards working and learning together for a sustainable future. David is a voluntary director of Life Squared, a not-for-profit organisation helping people to live happier, wiser and more meaningful lives within the pressure and complexity of the modern world.

Hilary Thornton
Hilary has previously served on Think Global’s Advisory Council and brings a wealth of expertise from a background in international development and previously as teacher, manager and researcher in education. As a consultant, Hilary also brings experience having worked with a number of international development agencies, governments, large NGOs and Foundations in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam and Laos. Hilary believes that creative and critical thinking set in a global context supports education at its best.
Anna Turrell
Senior Consultant within the sustainability practice of DNV Two Tomorrows, working with a number of global companies. Anna’‘s career has been spent largely in international sustainability consultancy, and been strongly directed by her overarching passion for promoting a better and more sustainable world for future generations. She works with organisations to support them in their journeys in becoming better corporate citizens and to contribute to developing the global sustainability agenda. She is involved in a number of international associations and global networks.
Brian Walton
Headteacher at the Ofsted-outstanding Headley Park Primary School in Bristol, serving a community of over 400 children. Brian is also a Local Leader of Education (developing system leadership across Bristol including developing head teacher induction and coaching) and the Vice Chair of the Bristol Headteachers Association. He is passionate about leadership and sustainability in schools and how this can be used to improve the lives of others.
Think Global's Advisory Council
Think Global also has an Advisory Council, made up of experts in different aspects of global learning. The Advisory Council advises the board and the staff team on current global learning trends and issues as well as strategic matters for the charity.
Nasrullah Anwar, Lancashire Global Education Centre (LGEC)
Nasrullah is Executive Director at LGEC. Previously, he was the Principal Officer at Building Bridges in Burnley (BBB), an Interfaith and Community Cohesion charity established following the 2001 Serious Disturbances in Northern Towns. His Masters is in Community Leadership, focusing particularly on the impact of community cohesion.
Dr. Matt Baillie Smith, Northumbria University
Matt is Professor of International Development at Northumbria University. He has been involved in development education and global learning for twenty years as an academic and practitioner, and is committed to developing understanding of global learning and how it can support struggles for a more just and sustainable world.
Rob Bowden, Lifeworlds Learning
As a learning innovator, Rob has worked within many educational sectors. As well as publishing and facilitation work, Rob specialises in change management, strategic planning and organisational visioning. He is driven by curiosity about relationships between people, society and environments, and by deep-seated beliefs in the power of transformative experiences.
Tom Burke,Y Care International
Tom is currently Director of Global Youth Work at Y Care International, the international development agency of the YMCA in the UK and Ireland; Chair of Trustee of Peace Child International and director of amplify.org.uk consultancy.
Pete Davis, Independent Consultant
Until 2009 Pete was Oxfam GB’s International Coordinator for Youth and Education. Over 30 years in development education he acquired experience and knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, pedagogy, and practices of development education, and its relevance to people’s learning. He contributed to the formation and capacity building of many DECs.
Chrissie Dell, Centre for Global Education York
Chrissie Dell is the Global Education Consultant at the Centre for Global Education, York – which is a Development Education Centre raising awareness of global issues and providing training and support in global education.
Christopher Harvey
Christopher is passionate about global learning and has diverse and varied experiences as a teacher, trainer and school leader within the education sector in both London and Rwanda. He has worked in partnership with INGO’s, NGO’s and government institutions to facilitate and enable others to develop organisation-wide initiatives and policies to widen participation in both urban and developing contexts.
Trevor Higginbottom, Global Education Consultant
Trevor was formerly HM Inspector of Schools. Previously , he was Chief Education Adviser for Barnsley LEA and Senior Education Officer with the English Schools Foundation , Hong Kong . Currently he is Chief Executive Consultant to the Shanghai Xiehe Education Organisation, and a Trustee of the DECSY .
His interests include school improvement and China both in terms of its education system and in the context of global education .
Dr David Hudson, University College London (UCL)
David is a Senior Lecturer at UCL where he works on public engagement with global poverty. He is interested in why people support development efforts, and uses a range of methods to answer these questions, from survey tools, to media, network and social media analysis, as well as experiments.
Sally Issler, Independent Consultant
Sally is an expert in global education research is on the management board of the Further Education Research Association (FERA) which publishes an academic peer review journal. She also has worked closely with awarding organisations in the UK and overseas, and is a trustee of Sports Leaders UK, the awarding arm of the British Sports Trust, which develops young volunteers in sporting activity.
Phil Long, DEED (Development Education in Dorset)
Phil has 20 years experience of working in businesses of all shapes and sizes across the globe, and has an advanced, practical founded understanding what ‘global skills’ are, why they are so critical and how business can work with educators to develop them.
Nigel Rayment, Magnified Learning
Nigel is Director of Magnified Learning, which specialises in delivering business impact through employee development. He is a blogger with the Huffington Post, and a Fellow of SEEd. He has published articles on ESD, co-operative and global learning, and active citizenship.
Ian Richards, Global Youth Work
Ian was previously manager of a successful Foundation Learning programme WBL at Lincolnshire County Council, sits on the National Leadership Committee and chairs the Education and Training Committee of the Community and Youth Workers Union, now part of Unite the Union.
He specialises in Global Youth Work.
Dr Roy Smith, Nottingham Trent University
Roy is Programme Leader, MA in International Development at Nottingham Trent University. He has focused his research on small island states, particularly those within the Pacific region. Currently Dr Smith is working on environmental and economic vulnerability issues in the Pacific region, with a particular emphasis on energy security.
Shelley Swift, The Ridings’ Federation of Academies
Shelley is a Federation Head of International for the Ridings’ Federation of Academies, and a member of Think Global’s Expert Schools Panel. She has led various multi-school groups, chairs the South West International Baccalaureate Coordinator network, runs workshops at international conferences, and has organised student-led ambassador opportunities.

Stuart’s knowledge relating to education for a just and sustainable world comes from over ten years working with marginalised young people in the UK and globally through global youth work, including in deprived inner-city communities; prisons in the UK and Sierra Leone; and the slums of Mumbai and Bangkok.
